The history of the matter of released-time LDS seminary for high school students in Salt Lake City is chronicled. Salt Lake City was the only school district in Utah that did not have a policy allowing released-time seminary from its beginnings in 1912 through the 1930s. Masons dominated the school board and prevented Mormon efforts to institute the policy from 1931 until 1943. In 1956, the granting of high school graduation credit for Bible seminary classes became an issue. However, the proposal for seminary credit was withdrawn.
