In the nineteenth century, the patriarchal authority of husbands and fathers was a pre-eminent idea in LDS thought. It is argued that the attention given by the Church to preserving the tradition of male dominance in the home was a reaction to developments occurring in Western society at large. The practice of plurality of wives under patriarchal rule was a vital part in the Church's effort to uphold male supremacy and female submission. Although there was some disillusionment and rebellion among Mormon women, the vast majority accepted patriarchal rule as God's inspired plan for their lives. Presently, without the reinforcement of polygamy and the rhetorical idealization of the Abrahamic household, Mormon patriarchy is slowly yielding to the Western democratic idea of equality of the sexes.
