Ashment discusses ways that the translation of the Book of Mormon was carried out, according to statements of those involved in the translation of the book. Different possibilities of what Joseph Smith meant by 'translation' are looked at. It is concluded that 'Joseph Smith's major concern was not formal (word-for-word) accuracy but rather the intelligibility of the message.'
