Amid the troubles and uncertainties following the deaths of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, John Smith provided a 'brigde of continuity for the office of Presiding Patriarch of the Church.' This article provides a biographical sketch of his life, with emphasis on his Church activity. After the excommunication of William Smith, the office of Patriarch remaind vacant for two and a half years. In December of 1847 the First Presidency was reorganized and, at the same time, John Smith was named Presiding Patriarch, and the following October he was released as president of the Salt Lake Stake. He eventally gave 5,560 patriarchal blessings, as Church or local Patriarch, including one to non-Mormon Thomas L. Kane.
