The purpose of Cannon's article is to trace the phenomenon of Mormon polygamy between 1890 and 1906. He feels that since the Church President had authority to sanction the performance of new plural marriages, the sentiments of the three men who held the office during this period offer clues as to the extent of the practice during this period. The administration of Wilford Woodruff, for example, was marked by confusion as president Woodruff condemned plural marriage in public but allowed it to continue in private. Lorenzo Snow, on the other hand, condemned the furtherance of polygamy, but evidence supports the view that some members of the Twelve did not follow his direction. Joseph F. Smith's attitude towards polygamy seems ambivalent. Cannon argues that he supported the practice but was careful in his selection of fellow Church leaders to whom he made his feelings known.
