This is the presidential address delivered at the annual meeting of the Mormon History Association at Claremont, California in 1991. Included is the full text of the introduction by W. Grant McMurray. Howard, the Historian of the RLDS Church for over 25 years, reviews the historical relationship between the LDS and RLDS churches. For 100 years, these churches built walls between each other and animosity prevailed. He points out some instances and RLDS figures (E. L. Kelley and George D. Wixom) beginning in the early twentieth century who tried to effect an opening in these religious boundaries and walls. He summarizes the developments which have brought a greater friendliness and openness between Mormon and RLDS people and their churches. This harmonious relationship came about through such developments as open access to the RLDS archives, RLDS/LDS historical document exchanges, personal relations and acquaintances developed through involvement in MHA/JWHA activities, cooperation in writing and publishing, etc.
