Bushman studies why history is constantly being looked at anew and given new interpretations. He argues that a historian's view of the past is influenced by his values, experiences, and what he sees as relevant, and Bushman states that LDS historians should seek to be shaped more by religion when studying history. He discusses major topics of potential historical focus, such as revelation, providential direction of peoples and nations, and inspiration through the Spirit of Christ.
