In 1911, the sego lily became the Utah state flower. This article tracks the changing interpretations of the lily. The pioneers viewed it in utilitarian ways as a source of food while twentieth-century pioneer descendants came to view it as a delicacy and an abstract symbol of the state and the Relief Society.
