The author explains the term as it first appeared in the Warsaw Signal as a contemptuous epitaph for non-LDS people who were friendly to the Saints. This usage remained current throughout the nineteenth century. During the twentieth century it has come to denote Latter-day Saints who have lapsed in observance of church laws and standards.
