The life of Matilda Hales, a devout Mormon midwife who served the communities of Millard County from the early to mid-1900s, provides insight into rural Utah community life during the early part of the twentieth century. She received her midwife training from Dr. Ellis R. Shipp and held strong views on smoking, alcohol, and the care of the sick. She also used consecrated oil extensively as an internally- administered remedy.
