Alexander notes that many interpretations of Mormon history have stressed isolationism while giving minor treatment to technological, intellectual, and industrial connections that Church leaders fostered in order to further the prosperity of the Kingdom. Historians need to take this more into account. Alexander then goes on to illustrate this by a case study of Wilford Woodruff's education, and then career in education and science in territorial Utah.
