Aaron DeWitt, born in 1833 in England, joined the Mormon Church and immigrated to Utah in 1857. He was one of the early settlers in Cache Valley and established the first bakery in Logan. He became disillusioned with the Church and vented his distaste for the way local LDS leaders ran things in Cache Valley by writing poetry in his journal. As the power and influence of the Church diminished with federal legislation and Utah's eventual admission as a state, he mellowed with the times. His experiences illustrate the Mormon treatment of dissenters in a community of believers during the 19th century.
