From the very outset, Mormon leaders emphasized the need for education. When one combines this aspect to the Mormons' conception of the universe as a static entity based on fixed laws and purpose, one can readily compare Mormonism with the prevalent concepts accepted by Americans in the 19th century--both were based on a romantic world view and both failed to fulfill their objectives.
