The first professional historian to serve as Church Historian reviews the history and accomplishments of the Church Historical Department from 1972 to 1982. He traces its founding and his appointment to actions taken by N. Eldon Tanner and Howard W. Hunter as early as 1963. He describes the relationship and support that the department received with Church Presidents and General Authorities. In hindsight, he mentions things that he would have done differently in the decade during which the History Division was associated with the Historical Department.
