In Utah, Masons prohibited the entry of Mormons into their lodges until 1984. When lodges were first chartered in Utah Territory (in 1860 at Camp Floyd), they excluded Mormons for polygamy. Although Mormons actively organized lodges before coming to Utah, Church leaders tried to distance the Church from Masonry after 1847. After polygamy was no longer an issue in excluding Mormons from joining lodges in Utah, various rationales were employed to retain a strict non-Mormon membership. Beginning in 1950, certain reappraisals were undertaken which resulted in the exclusionary policy being changed in 1984 to allow admittance of Mormons into Masonic lodges in Utah.
