This article traces the brief existence of a series of meetings held by a group of Mormon intellectuals, known informally as the 'Swearing Elders,' between 1949 and 1955. The group consisted of faculty members (primarily) from the University of Utah, including Herb Larson, William Mulder, Don Orton, Jack Adamson, Lowell Bennion, Sterling McMurrin, Waldemer P. Read, and Obert C. Tanner. In later years the group was augmented by professors from other universities, including BYU, as well as noted authors and intellectuals. On some occasions general authorities attended, although the article points out that the Church generally looked upon these meetings with suspicion.
