Campbell treats the conflict within the Battalion due to the divided loyalties of the men. On one hand, there were the LDS appointed senior officers, e.g. Jefferson Hunt. On the other, within the enlisted ranks were men holding higher priesthood authority, e.g. Levi Hancock. The tension between religious and military authority badly split the Battalion.
