The author states that Joseph Smith never called the social system attempted in Jackson County the united order. Brigham Young began to use this term in 1874 and the term has subsequently been misused. The author also states that 'if there has been confusion in the use of the term united order, there has been more in the use of the designation 'Order of Enoch.' He goes on to discuss the history of these concepts.
