Spiritualism 'did not succeed in winning substantial numbers of Mormons to its ranks....The failure of spiritualism in nineteenth century Utah is therefore an instructive case study dramatizing the inherent disadvantages of a faddish, quasi-intellectual, loose movement in competition with a movement that had its own theology, its own internal consistency, its own satisfactions and appeals, and above all its own firm organizational base.'
