New discoveries about the life of Joseph Smith (1805-44), the Mormon prophet, demand a reappraisal of Fawn Brodie's 1945 biography of Smith, NO MAN KNOWS MY HISTORY. Despite her impressive research Brodie misunderstood Smith's nature and intentions; she judged him on the basis of a secular-sectarian approach. Brodie's biography of Smith, however, has maintined its status despite much change in the way that American intellectual and religous history is viewed.
