In the 1964 U.S. Senate race in Utah, Ernest L. Wilkinson was the Republican challenger to incumbent Frank E. Moss. This article is a behind-the-scenes look at this fascinating campaign. Beginning with Wilkinson's decision to take a leave of absence as BYU president to enter the fray, the article examines those key actions which led to Wilkinson's embarrassing defeat. Although he seemed to have the support of Pres. David O. McKay, that support was not publicly evident. That and other developments in the campaign engineered his defeat. After his election loss, he returned to the helm at BYU.
