An analysis of Mormon origins of the idea of a communitarian 'Kingdom of God' and the unique social movement of the 'Gathering.' The author also implies that Mormons have been more interested in plans than purposes, probably because of a heavy reliance on the 'overawing charisma of the Prophet,' and their scripture literalism. What happens when divinely ordained plans fail? A reaction against Young by Reorganites. The major task is, however, reconciling freedom and collectivism, in reconciling the Kingdom and the Gathering.
