John Horner was a passenger on the 'Brooklyn' and became a farmer in California, providing fresh vegetables and grain to gold-crazed miners. He amassed quite a fortune (nearly a million dollars) from his crops, but later went bankrupt in the panic of 1854 due to his loaning too much money and endorsing too many bonds.
