Hastings supposedly had skills as a guide and the article states that he helped some Mormons come to SLC. However, he was also an opportunist of sorts and later used to his advantage a rumor that thousands of Mormons were marching to settle California. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the article deals with his interactions with Mormons.
