In mid-1848, Mormon Battalion veterans of the Mexican War made their way back from the Sacramento Valley of California to Utah. Their three scouts who had disappeared were later discovered in shallow graves with badly mutilated bodies. Clues were scattered about to make it appear that the scouts had been murdered by Indians. A close scrutiny of the unconvincing evidence, however, verifies that the culprits were not the Indians of the vicinity and perhaps not Indians at all. The murder mystery at Tragedy Springs is, and will probably remain, unsolved.
