The RLDS Church historian describes the traditional RLDS perspective of church history which had as its aim the repudiation of Utah Mormonism. 1965 was a watershed year for RLDS history with the publication of Robert Flanders' book. Prior to his pathbreaking work, RLDS historians were wont to deny the reality of Nauvoo history. He reviews some of the early Nauvoo heritage which recent RLDS historians have considered and acknowledge. They include such things as Joseph Smith's teachings about plurality of Gods and plural marriage. He recounts an early (1924) call for a revisionist Nauvoo history by an RLDS apostle and reviews recent professional developments in the restoration/interpretation of historic sites and writing of history.
