"This is a study of the discontinued periodicals once published by and for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These publications were newspapers and magazines. Most of the them were published by the Church in general or by some organization or geographic unit. Some were regarded as official organs of the sponsors. A few of them were not owned by the Church but were the property of individuals desirous of promoting the interests of the Church. These may have have never been regarded as speaking officially for that organization but were encouraged because of their advocacy of principles or doctrines in harmony with those of the church. Some (like the Juvenile Instructor) were the property of individuals when they began publication but later were taken over by the Church or one of its auxiliaries. Others were evidently controlled or owned by the Church at first but later lost all connection with that body." [Author]
