In the late 1850s and early 1860s, two opposing newspapers competed for readers and subscribers in Utah. The "Valley Tan," sold principally to soldiers based at Camp Floyd, provided a voice for the gentiles. The "Mountaineer" was the first pro-Mormon newspaper in the territory that was not owned by the Church. The latter newspaper responded to critical attacks on the Mormons printed in the "Valley Tan." Both of these newspapers focused on the issue of crime in the territory.
