Arrington combines the Nauvoo of the past with the Nauvoo of today. He describes the city's beginnings--from the 'swamp' discovered by Joseph Smith to the 'City of Joseph'--an attempt to make the city a 'zion.' He includes pictures of present-day Nauvoo and gives the histories behind its historical sites. As quoted by Arrington himself: 'the dusty roads of Nauvoo are the pathways to history.'
