Research into the origins of the Deseret Alphabet reveals that the sounds and structure of the curious alphabet were borrowed entirely from the Pitman shorthand system. The design of the Deseret Alphabet characters, however, remains a mystery. The diversion of time, money, and energy into this experimental language reform during the early Mormon settlement period is also briefly discussed.
