Although the 1925 Scopes trial was a divisive issue in many states, Utah's response was calm and unemotional. Utahns elected "to support the constitutional requirement that the public schools should foster a nonsectarian educational environment." This calm response is traced to several influences including the traditional support for science and education in the state, the ambiguous reactions among LDS officials, etc.
