According to traditional Mormon history, Brigham Young underwent a miraculous transfiguration into the likeness of Joseph Smith on 8 August 1844. A review of contemporary and retrospective accounts of this transformative miracle casts some doubt on this mystical event. He suggests that the many later accounts of a "mantle of Joseph" miracle "arose in response to the people's need for evidence of a prophetic call." He believes that the story of what actually occurred on 8 August 1844 can be told better without reliance on a Mormon myth.
