His analysis proceeds on the basis of several premises: 1) early religions should be considered within the context of their milieu and not from the perspective of their uniqueness; 2) sociological and anthropological models should be employed in historical examination; 3) early religions, including Mormonism, have strong millennial tendencies; 4) successful religous movements, like early Chrisitanity and Mormonism, adapt and mitigate their millennialism to survive; 5) successful religions in their earliest stage strongly repudiate the claims of their competitors.
