Part 1 gives info on the life of pioneers during early settlement in Utah; illustrates conditions of poverty. Huntington is called to guide a company of Salt Lake City and Provo men to Mormon settlements in Carson Valley, NV, and San Bernardion, CA. Purpose was to gather Mormons to Utah in preparation for military defense against Johnston's army. Part 2 chronicles journey from Rush Valley (Tooele) area into the desert. Describes physical landmarks (springs, valleys), and recollectes author's previous dealings in this region. Part 3 continues across deseret. part 4, reaches Carson settlement. Part 5, returns to SLC with company of California and Nevada Saints....
