Moses Smith (1800-1849) was the first Mormon in Wisconsin, settling there in 1835-36. He organized the Church's first branch in Wisconsin and presided over the Church in Wisconsin with his brother Aaron. In 1839, Moses Smith moved to Illinois where he helped organize the Walnut Grove Branch. After Joseph Smith's death, he was bewildered by the succession claims, he initially followed Brigham Young and then went off into the Iowa wilderness with the misdirected James Emmett. He then affiliated with his brother-in-law James J. Strang for a short while until, having second thoughts, he left him and quit active participation in any organized religion until his death.
