This article examines the millennialistic beliefs of Latter-day Saints from the restoration of the church to present. It describes the controversy surrounding evolution as some church leaders insisted on a literal approach to the Bible while others embraced the scientific evidence for evolution. Since evolution assumes that Earth's existence is much longer than the 6,000 years accounted for in the Bible, modern thought could indicate that the Second Coming is farther in the future than Saints have traditionally believed.
