Newel K. Whitney built an ashery in Kirtland in the early 1820s. In the ashery, ashes from hardwood trees were used to make alkali. Alkali was important to making soap, glass, gunpowder, various textiles, and other products. This article discusses the processes involved in producing alkali in an ashery. It also discusses the role the ashery would have played in the Mormon community of Kirtland after Whitney joined the Church.
