A transcription of two letters found in the Sacramento Historical Library are printed. The first is a published letter from Robert Petch, dated 29 October 1848, from San Francisco. He describes the success he had searching for gold. An introductory letter mentions his Connecticut background and conversion to Mormonism. The second letter is written by Isaac Leigh dated 1 July 1847. He describes his experiences in ranching, farming, relations with the Spanish inhabitants, earthquakes, and the appearance and cost of living at Yerba Buena
