The 1860 overland trail diary of Clara Downes (1836-1915), preserved at Bancroft Library, is unique because she traveled across the country as a young single woman. She wrote in detail about the Mormons in Salt Lake. Her adventures do not fit the gender stereotype. Although impressed with the appearance of Salt Lake City, she disdained polygamy and Mormon doctrine. She heard Brigham Young speak and commented on the shooting of Jesse Earl.
