Mauss is concerned about the extremes of total assimilation and total separation. The Church needs to balance between the two in order to continue to grow and to be unique. To Mauss, the beehive symbolizes respectability and accommodation while the angel represents 'peculiarity' or a unique tradition. He concludes with the hope that the Church will defend their uniqueness, like the Jews of old.
