See review by Kenneth Godfrey in Dialogue 20 (Winter 1987): 190-92. Godfrey characterizes Berrett as a faithful historian, who has written a history that is good, but ignores the controversies, problems, and challenges to the faith unearthed by a bevy of writers. Godfrey characterizes Berrett as believing that nothing in Church history was left to chance. Instead, the hand of God quietly led the prophets and their followers toward that rendezvous with the Second Coming. The book represents in many ways the kind of history Pres. Ezra Taft Benson and Elder Boyd K. Packer have encouraged. But those who know, love, and admire Berrett for his past scholarship and his commitment to the Church will find him 'lovingly revealed' in the book.
