This is a Historian's Corner piece. Melville provides several Brigham Young letters that urge Priesthood brethren to not allow themselves to be divided in political partisanship. The setting is a dispute between Orson Hyde (Whig) and Almon W. Babbitt (Democrat). Young counsels them to continue their differences outwardly to facilitate Statehood but not allow politics to divide them privately.
