The first precious metal mining operation in Utah occured near Minersville in the late 1850s. This story contradicts the generally accepted notion that Mormon leaders discouraged precious metal mining and that such mining was a development initiated by Patrick Connor's soldiers. The early mining missions and first successful precious metal mining operation promoted and supported by Brigham Young are herein related.
