This article begins by describing the early experiences of the author in joining the Church and participating in it from 1836 to 1846. The primary focus of the article, however, is the Mormon Battalion, since the author became a member of the Battalion. The author describes the trek of the Battalion in detail, including accounts of the Battle of the Bulls, and the first baptism performed in California. In addition, when the author was discharged, he went to Northern California and was involved in the discovery of gold at Columa mill. The piece ends when the author arrives in the Salt Lake Valley.
