Although hostility toward Mormons long prevailed in Nevada, the anti-Mormon forces abstained from imposing test oaths on the Mormon populace until 1887 when the legislature enacted laws designed to disenfranchise Mormons. Senator William Stewart promoted the legislation in order to further his scheme to annex the southern portion of Idaho to Nevada. But the new test oath legislation was reversed by the Nevada courts in 1888.
