Roberts, a turn-of-the-century Utah Democrat, supported the Mormon Church but opposed the church leaders' (particularly President Joseph F. Smith's) use of their religious authority to promote the Republican Party. On the other hand, Roberts used his own position as a church official to promote the League of Nations. Other political issues discussed are women suffrage, prohibition, and the Mormon Church's 'Political Manifesto' of 1896.
