In 1868 the Mormon Church urged its members to establish community cooperatives which would distribute profits and keep business within the church. The settlements around Bear Lake, Idaho, successfully ran community cooperatives for years. Paris had a cooperative store, dairy, tannery, shoe shop, harness shop, shingle mill, tin shop, and tailor shop.
