Author suggests that the image of the Church laboring diligently to convert the Lamanites and reclaim them from their fallen state is more myth than reality. Indian missions were sporadic and generally unproductive. Also, energies of the Church were directed towards the establishment of viable Mormon communities. In this latter context Mormons had many of the same attitudes as gentiles in taking possession of Indian lands and exploiting natural resources with Indian approval.
