There was a Democratic sweep in this State; Democrats retained their Senatorial seat, regained one House seat, filled all five State elective offices, won back both State houses, and voted for Johnson. The widespread impression that Utah is particularly conservative is not borne out by its electoral history, and 1964 showed this again. Indeed, important in the Democratic sweep was the fact that the Republicans were saddled by two Right-extremist candidates, Goldwater and Ernest Wilkinson, the nominee for the Senate. Johnson's vote--54 percent--was less than the vote achieved by the three successful Democratic candidates for Congress, each of whom polled over 57 percent. Of special interest is the cultivated friendship between Johnson and David O. McKay, president of the Mormon Church. 7 notes. (H. Aphteker)
