"Genealogy. Born at Hartford, Washington County, New York, 1811. Moved to New Lebanon, Columbia County, c. 1814. Lived there until 1822. Boarded with various farmers for whom he worked, 1822-30. Studied arithmetic and bookkeeping. Went to Lorain County, Ohio, with brothers Nelson and Parley, 1827. Studied geography, grammar, and surveying at boarding school in New York, 1829-30. Desire to know God's will concerning him, 1829-30. Baptized by brother Parley, September 1830. Met Joseph Smith at Fayette, New York, October 1830. Ordained elder, 1830. Mission to Colesville, 1830. To Kirtland with Samuel H. Smith, 1831. Ohio missions with Lyman Wight and Parley Pratt, 1831. To Missouri, 1831. Returned to Ohio. Ohio mission, 1832.
